Upper MYP English Language & Literature Teacher

When: Next academic year 2026/2027

The Upper MYP English Language & Literature Teacher is responsible for engaging students aged 14–16 in the study of language, literary texts, and media through inquiry, conceptual understanding, and purposeful analytical work, aligned with the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (MYP). The role involves designing and delivering concept-based learning experiences, including well-structured textual investigations and real-world applications that directly support learning objectives, while fostering sophisticated critical thinking, extended writing skills, and independent textual analysis. The teacher contributes to collaborative curriculum design, ensuring strong vertical and horizontal articulation, and supports the consistent implementation of MYP teaching and assessment practices.

Key Responsibilities:

    • Guide students in the sophisticated analysis of literary and non-literary texts across a range of forms, styles, and contexts.
    • Develop students’ extended writing skills and capacity for independent textual analysis and interpretation.
    • Support students in making meaningful connections between texts, global issues, and personal perspectives.
    • Ensure rigorous and consistent application of MYP assessment criteria at the upper years level.
    • Connect language and literature concepts to real-world applications (e.g. media literacy, global issues, cultural awareness).
    • Plan and deliver inquiry-driven English Language & Literature teaching aligned with MYP 4–5 objectives.
    • Differentiate instruction to support diverse learners and promote student agency.
    • Design, review, and refine curriculum collaboratively, ensuring strong vertical and horizontal articulation.
    • Integrate global contexts, ATL skills, and interdisciplinary learning experiences.
    • Ensure curriculum coherence and consistent assessment practices across the English team.
    • Prepare and submit lesson plans in line with school expectations and timelines.
    • Document teaching, learning, and assessment on school platforms in line with programme requirements.
    • Assess using MYP criteria and provide timely, constructive feedback.
    • Write detailed, personalized student reports and maintain accurate, up-to-date records of grades and assessment data in line with school timelines and requirements.
    • Analyse assessment data to identify trends, inform instructional decisions, and support student progress.
    • Promote a positive school culture, including academic honesty and responsible use of sources.
    • Support and engage in Service as Action (SaA) and wider school initiatives.
    • Uphold and actively implement school safeguarding policies in all aspects of the role.
    • Engage in professional development and contribute to ongoing MYP implementation.

Requirements

Education

    • Bachelor’s degree in English Language, Literature, or a related field.
    • IB recognised subject-specific workshops (preferred).

Experience

    • Minimum 3 years proven experience teaching English at the middle school level.
    • Experience with the IB MYP framework is a must.

Skills and Abilities

    • Strong understanding of MYP philosophy, concept-based teaching, and assessment methodology.
    • Expertise in designing challenging, inquiry-driven English lessons that develop sophisticated textual analysis, extended writing, and independent critical thinking.
    • Ability to apply MYP assessment criteria rigorously and consistently at the upper years level, ensuring high standards of student performance.
    • Ability to design meaningful learning activities and real-world applications that directly support conceptual understanding and MYP objectives.
    • Excellent communication, organization, and collaboration skills, with a strong commitment to teamwork.
